The Florida Keys are a chain of islands stretching along U.S. Hwy. 1 - the Overseas Highway - for 110 miles between Key Largo and Key West. Tip: make this drive (with Jimmy Buffett CD collection) during the day because it is splendidly beautiful! And don't forget to enjoy the famously brilliant sunsets. The Keys are diverse and are categorized by five general areas:

  • Key Largo - Most famous for its stunning offshore reef, this area is also known for watersports and a kick-back-and-relax attitude.
  • Islamorada - Known as the "sport fishing capital of the world," Islamorada, or "the Purple Isles," is also home to a number of beautiful state parks.
  • Marathon - This sleepy fishing village has evolved into a bustling town that is truly the "heart of the keys" with an abundance of fun family attractions.
  • Lower Keys - Just south of Marathon you will cross the Seven Mile Bridge that joins the upper and lower keys. The largest and least developed area in the chain, the Lower Keys offers abundant wildlife (it's home to the Key deer) and solitude for those who truly want to get away from it all.
  • Key West - Only 90 miles from Cuba (it's the southernmost point in the U.S.) and 150 miles from Miami, history, eccentricity, and island charm mix to create the perfect tropical getaway.
